The study, released Monday, found the new system, which is expected to become operational next year, will reduce the cost of power transmission by a factor of four to five.
The Taha generator is expected have a capacity of 200,000 megawatts.
Iowa has one of the world’s largest hydroelectric power systems, and the U.S. Department of Energy awarded the power plant to Iowa in 2016.
The new power plant was developed by American Electric Power and is operated by a consortium of Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota and Wisconsin utility companies.
Iowa officials said the utility will use the power to improve its grid reliability and reduce energy bills, with an expected saving of about $4 billion a year.
It will generate about 8 percent of the electricity that it consumes in the state.
